Our Story
In 1939, as the US recovered from the Great Depression and war loomed large in Europe, young Bud Vander Griend became a partner in a small lumberyard located along Fishtrap Creek on the northern edge of small-town Lynden, WA. and Vander Griend Lumber was born.
As time passed, the lumberyard blossomed as the surrounding communities grew. In his teenage years, Buds’ son Gary would work summers delivering coal and presto logs to local families and businesses. After graduating collage at University of Puget Sound Gary came to work fulltime at the lumberyard.
While Vander Griend Lumber has grown tremendously since 1939, our core of honesty, integrity, and fairness remains the same and we continue to operate in our original location at 8461 Depot Road- now in the center of Lynden. Passed down through the generations, Gary’s son Tad now owns and operates Vander Griend Lumber today.
Over the years, Vander Griend Lumber has transitioned from delivering coal, Presto logs, and lumber to selling and installing garage doors, shower doors, windows, mirrors, shelving, railing systems, and more. And, now employs over 40 employees. Of course, true to our name, we still provide lumber and building materials to homeowners, contractors and businesses around Whatcom County, Northwest Washington, and beyond.
As we continue to grow, expand, and prepare for the future, we invite you to come in and experience how the Vander Griend way of honesty, integrity, fairness, and local community involvement can benefit you. From contractors to homeowners and everyone in between, your friends at Vander Griend’s are ready to help!
